Black Block: A Bold Display Font That Elevates Brand Identity

Choosing the Right Typeface for a Bakery’s Packaging Redesign

I recently helped a local bakery refresh their packaging design. They were launching a new line of artisanal cookies and wanted the boxes to feel premium, yet approachable. One of the first decisions we made was choosing the right font for the product labels. After testing several options, we landed on Black Block—a thick, bold, and robotic-looking display font that immediately gave the packaging a modern edge. The font’s strong presence made the brand name stand out on shelves without feeling too flashy or overdesigned.

Understanding the Style and Personality of Black Block

Black Block is not your average font. It belongs to the Display category, which means it's best suited for headlines, logos, and short bursts of text where visual impact matters. Its thick letterforms and clean edges give it a futuristic, almost mechanical feel—perfect for brands that want to communicate strength, confidence, and modernity. Unlike traditional serif or sans serif fonts, Black Block doesn’t blend into the background. It makes a statement.

We used it on the bakery’s logo and main label text, and it worked beautifully. The contrast between the dark, bold font and the soft pastel packaging created a strong visual hierarchy. Customers could instantly recognize the brand from across the room, which is crucial in retail environments.

Real-World Applications for Black Block

One of the great things about Black Block is its versatility across different business materials. We used it not only on packaging but also in several other brand touchpoints:

Because it’s a display font, we avoided using it in long paragraphs or body copy. Instead, we paired it with a clean sans serif for descriptions and ingredient lists. This combination gave the packaging both personality and readability.

How Typography Impacts Brand Perception

Typography is one of the most underrated tools in brand building. The right typeface can instantly communicate trust, sophistication, playfulness, or innovation. In the case of this bakery, switching from a generic sans serif to Black Block made their brand feel more intentional and polished.

Customers often make split-second decisions based on visual cues. A strong, consistent font like Black Block helps reinforce brand recognition and professionalism. Whether it's on a candle jar, a skincare label, or a café menu, using a premium display font can make your brand feel more premium, too.

Readability and Practical Use Across Mediums

When working with bold display fonts like Black Block, it's important to consider where and how they’ll be used. On printed packaging, we made sure the font size was large enough to remain legible on small boxes. For digital use—like in Instagram templates—we checked how it looked on mobile screens to ensure clarity.

It’s also worth noting that Black Block works best in short phrases or headlines. Using it for longer paragraphs would make it harder to read. We used it for the brand name and key selling points, then paired it with a simpler font for supporting text. This kept the design clean and easy to digest.

Font Pairing Ideas for a Balanced Design

Since Black Block is so bold, we paired it with a minimalist sans serif to balance the design. This combination gave the bakery’s packaging a modern yet approachable feel. Here are a few other pairing ideas that work well with this font:

These pairings allow Black Block to shine while keeping the overall design cohesive and readable.

What to Check Before Using Black Block in Your Branding

Before using any commercial font, it’s important to verify the licensing terms. Black Block is typically sold with a commercial license, which means it can be used in product packaging, digital downloads, merchandise, and client work. Still, it’s always wise to double-check what’s included—especially if you’re using it in print or digital templates for resale.

Also, make sure to review the available file formats, alternates, ligatures, and multilingual support. These features can affect how the font looks in different languages or design software. We tested it in both Adobe Illustrator and Canva, and it performed well in both environments.
